Mining operations at Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah, 2009 by Arbyreed. License: CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 Land worldwide is deeply marked human activity, which became heavier, harder, more wasteful, and permanent after the industrial revolution. The landscapes of Anthropocene encompass riddled proving ground test sites, nuclear wastelands, immense open-pit mines, contaminated lands, disappearing bodies water, boundless landfills, discarded territories. These grounds are growth, production, destruction: sceneries where show quarrying, discharge, stockpile, abandonment, drainage, burial staged. However, this rush to exhaustion giving shape landscape tomorrow: examination unforeseen uses values attributed in current age some these ‘sceneries consumption’ – Mine near Salt Lake City; former Fresh Kills landfill New York; decommissioned Templehof Airport Berlin– suggest they may play unpredictable cultural strategic roles next future.

Parks, Buffer Zones, and Costly Enforcement

The reality of protected area management is that enforcing forest and park boundaries is costly and so most likely incomplete, due in part to the pressures exerted on the boundaries by local people who often have traditionally relied on the park resources. Buffer zones are increasingly being proposed and implemented to protect both forest resources and livelihoods. Developing a spatially-explic...

Cold-climate vegetative buffer zones as pesticide-filters for surface runoff.

Vegetative buffer zones adjacent to watercourses can be effective filters for diffuse pollution from agriculture. Several investigations, even during snowmelt season, have shown that retention of sediments and sediment-bound nutrients in runoff water has been high through buffer zones (BZ). It is likely that BZ also can be effective filters for sediment-bound pesticides. The retention of glypho...

Shaping Future Landscapes: the Scenario Approach

European landscapes change rapidly due to increasing pressure of urbanization on agricultural land. Thus, there is a large interest from policy and public on the future shape of landscapes. The interest is putting high demands on individuals that are involved in the decision-making and research process. Landscape indicators get increasing importance in current studies on landscapes change, but—...
